Myth : Steve Smith is much better Test batsman than Virat Kohli.

In this thread i will try to break the myth.

Comparing Test batsman looks the easiest thing, just compare the averages but it isn& #39;t true.

Smith averages 62.84 compared to Virat& #39;s 53.62, but let& #39;s go deeper.

1/n
Batting in 4th innings is much more difficult than batting in 1st innings. Different difficulty level in different innings.

So I have tried to come up with a method which will analyse each innings differently & try to come up with a combined score.

#Cricket
2/n
Smith made his Test debut in 2010 & Virat in 2011, so whatever stats used here are from 1st January 2010.

Overall average of all batsmen in :-

1st inn - 35.15 = x1
2nd inn - 31.85 = x2
3rd inn - 29.34 = x3
4th inn - 24.99 = x4

Difficulty clearly increases with innings.

3/n
Remember x1, x2, x3 & x4 from last part, i will use them frequently.

I will convert Smith & Virat& #39;s averages in different innings to 1st innings equivalent & calculate their mean to get final normalised score.

#Cricket
4/n
Smith& #39;s avg in :-

1st inn - 89.76
Its 1st inn eq = 89.76 (no brainer)

2nd inn - 63.37
Its 1st inn eq = 63.37*(x1/x2) = 69.93

3rd inn - 49.09
Its 1st inn eq = 49.09*(x1/x3) = 58.81

4th inn - 30.68
Its 1st inn eq = 30.68*(x1/x4) = 43.15

#Cricket
5/n
Kohli& #39;s avg in :-

1st inn - 52.74
Its 1st inn eq = 52.74

2nd inn - 74.85
Its 1st inn eq = 74.85*(x1/x2) = 82.61

3rd inn - 35.57
Its 1st inn eq = 35.57*(x1/x3) = 42.61

4th inn - 49.77
Its 1st inn eq = 49.77*(x1/x4) = 70.00

Now let& #39;s calculate their final normalised scores.

Smith& #39;s normalised score = (Sum of his 1st inn eq of all inns)/4
=(89.76+69.93+58.81+43.15)/4
= 65.26

Virat& #39;s normalised score = (Sum of his 1st inn eq of all inns)/4
=(52.74+82.61+42.61+70.00)/4
= 61.99

Actual avg :-
Smith - 62.84
Virat - 53.62
Ratio = 62.84/53.62 = 1.17

Smith looks 17% better than Virat if going purely by averages.

Normalised score :-
Smith - 65.26
Virat - 61.99
Ratio = 65.26/61.99 = 1.05

Smith is just 5% better than Virat if going by normalised scores.

8/n
Normalised score signifies what would have been their average if they batted everytime in 1st innings.

Interesting thing here to look for is Smith& #39;s avg in 1st inns is 89.76 compared to Virat& #39;s 52.74 but Virat still closes the gap in final score.

Reason for that is Virat& #39;s 4th inn brilliance, he averages 49.77 compared to Smith& #39;s 30.68.

Some of his notable 4th inn knocks :-

1. 141 at Adelaide 2014
2. 105* at Wellington 2014
3. 49 at Edgbaston 2018
4. 63 at Wankhede 2011
5. 49* at Rajkot 2016

Similarities b/w them :-
Leading by example.

Difference:-
Smith leads by wrong example (sandpaper & brainfade incidents) while Virat always respected rules of game.

Conclusion :-
Though Smith is little better but I& #39;ll prefer Virat as Role Model.
