Me: Some random thoughts on Hamilton, a thread. 1/x
Just watched it. Gutted and spent from weeping. It is a work of staggering power, performed by a cast and crew never to be equalled. I am so grateful they filmed it this way so we can have it forever. AND ALSO I am so deeply exhausted by this show’s bullshit. 2/x
It has major gender issues. All the women do is pine for Hamilton. They have no character arc or interests of their own once they meet him. It barely even passes the Bechdel Test. 4/x
I am particularly enraged at the unquestioned idea the show presents that the Secretary of the Treasury had an affair with a 23 year old abuse victim who sought help from him, and somehow she was the one taking advantage of him. 5/x
Eliza’s monoglogue at the very end, about how she spends her life after Hamilton’s death, is so powerful that it exposes the show’s utter lack of curiosity about possibly its most fascinating subject. WHERE IS MY GIANT ELIZA BIOGRAPHY. WHERE IS MY ELIZA MUSICAL. 6/x
And also. The show is so, so good y’all. The music and the choreo and the performances and the sets and the costumes and the writing and all of the art of it.7/x
It takes these people at last down from their marble pedestals. It invites us all to see ourselves as potential revolutionaries. It reminds us of the best impulses of the Revolution. It's also a DAMNING tale of the wages of toxic masculinity, whether it means to be or not. 8/x
And the cast! Daveed! Renee! Phillipa! Leslie! Oak! Has there ever been a better demonstration of how much we ALL gain when creators of color gain creative control? 9/x
Oh Hamilton. You make me so, so angry, and I love you so. I wish I knew how to quit you. Please never leave. 10/10
(P.S., I would very much like to request a @FANTIPodcast episode about Hamilton, and a @FuckboisOfLit epi, too.)
