Floods Wash Over Assam

Every year the North-eastern state of Assam and its various districts are affected by the floods. This year, too, the heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in the state for the last couple of months.
National Media is busy in telling about Pakistan, Kim jong un, Floods in Japan etc. But they forget Assam is drowning let's take a quick glance what's happening in Assam.
1. The tributaries of the Brahmaputra and the Barak flood most of Assam every year, and Assam’s extent and duration of flooding is probably the most acute among India’s states as a result, with surges between April and September.
2. As a second surge of floodwaters washed over Assam since the third week of June, over 1.5 million people in 25 districts had been affected, the death toll had climbed to 34. Some 20,000 people have taken shelter in 270 relief camps across the state, according to sources .
3. The waters also took a heavy toll on livestock and affected over 87,000 ha of cultivated area.
4. Most of the protected areas in the state, including Kaziranga, Manas, Dibru-Saikhowa, Orang, Nameri, Pobitora, Laokhowa and Bura Chapori, are flooded.
5. Embankments, roads, bridges, culverts and many other infrastructures have been damaged at various places in Dibrugarh, Baksa, Nagaon, Barpeta, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Morigaon, Majuli, Sivasagar and Kokrajhar districts.
6. It can be argued that the national media plays a dual and hypocritical role in terms of coverage of the news related to the northeastern states. In contemporary times, the political-economic angle of this discrimination merits a separate analysis.
