I know everyone has way too much crap to deal with right now than to care much about a little football club from a poor northern town with few fans, but please bear with me & maybe you'll care just a little more by the end of this thread...
We all know the Premier League is awash with money, that big clubs spend obscenely, but football isn't only the PL, the English game is what it is because of the lower leagues, small clubs who struggle to survive but are vital in their communities. Wigan Athletic is one of these
Maybe you've read about us going into administration this week. Maybe you laughed because the owners blamed Brexit, & Wigan is a Brexit town. You'd be wrong to accept the past owners nonsense words or to laugh at our situation. This thread explains why.
Here's a thread that explains what's been done to us. By now this is an international scandal. It is not a case of a club spending beyond its means & being irresponsible. Please read. https://twitter.com/marksparko/status/1279000646335836163?s=19
So if you've read that thread, & there's much more evidence Wigan fans have, then you'll understand we're victims of what's very possibly highly criminal enterprise, fraud & a total failure of systems designed to protect clubs. Our MP agrees as does the Mayor of Gtr Manchester.
So, why should you care? It's just a football club, right, & a little one at that. I'm going to ask you to start caring by focusing on what my little club does in its community, a poor, neglected & too often ignored community, work that will potentially stop.
I'm just going to highlight a small number of things done in the most recent weeks, for example the continuing support of vulnerable lonely people in the area despite Covid restrictions. Above & beyond!
Broken thread.... next tweet here https://twitter.com/mojitoBaB/status/1279382170579107846?s=19
Supporting vulnerable families by making up & delivering educational & activity packs across the borough.
It works on social inclusion, with minority groups, is one of the biggest supporters of the local food bank, has an amazing history of supporting families with sick children & really is the beating heart of the town.
If you're not convinced of its importance & how much the town & the country needs it to be saved, then consider what it does in a Brexit voting town as a much needed force for good.
It strongly supported Black Lives Matter & does not tolerate racism from fans of the club.
Some of you will remember this. An important stand in the fight against intolerance & racism & we took it despite it risking alienating our already relatively small fanbase. https://twitter.com/mojitoBaB/status/1267784826867920898?s=19
My club is proudly & fiercely anti-bigotry, anti-intolerance & pro-inclusion. That means so much in a town like Wigan.
When racism & xenophobia is on the rise in small towns like ours, then I can't express how important it is to have a football club in that town that actively fights this growing hate. It's not just important, it's vital. @LaticsOfficial is vital. It must be saved.
Wigan Athletic @LaticsOfficial, or Latics as we're known, is a force for good in bad times. For this reason alone, nevermind the football, we MUST be saved & I want to thank @lisanandy & @AndyBurnhamGM for doing all they can to help us.
So now I get to the point where I ask you to donate if you can, or share this thread so we can be saved. Every £ will help & will go where it is most needed. Please, even if you're not a football fan, help us. We really are very worthy of it. I promise. Link to follow 🙏🙏🙏
And here it is. This is much more than football & if you're a football fan, it's more than just Latics. If it can be done to our club, it can be done to yours. Please, please help us. Thank you for reading, sharing or donating. I appreciate your time. https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/official-wigan-athletic-football-club-fundraiser#start
