HAMILTON: a thread...
Hamilton is more than a musical. It is a political and artistic statement. If you haven’t seen it, you should - it’s on Disney+ now and you can use the free trial to watch it. SOME of the things I love are:

1/
2/
- it’s a hiphop opera which showcases the artistic brilliance of rap, wordplay and heightens the form.
- it depicts famous events in history as rap battles and they are PERFECT
- the whole cast wears their natural hair - afros and curls in abundance
3/
- Thomas Jefferson (a notorious and wicked slaver) is reimagined as a black man with a full Afro. It’s a powerful statement (and it’s fabulous)
- the line “I’m Socrates throwing verbal rocks at these mediocrities” is PURE GENIUS
4/
- Women have an actual voice and are celebrated for their intelligence “we hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, and when I meet Thomas Jefferson imma compel him to include women in the sequel - WERK!” Angelica Schuyler
5/
- one of my favourite songs, ‘Dear Theodosia’, is a duet love song from two fathers to their newborn babies. Pure, raw, vulnerable tender masculinity.
- the line “immigrants - we get the job done!” is 👌
- it explores the power of WRITING to empower people and change the world
