i honestly am not sure how the kaikai kiki flower got known as hobicore flower but it isn't! ive been to murakami's exhibit before and he really took the time to develop that as his artistic symbol. this is different from people just selling bootleg hello kitty stickers because+ https://twitter.com/jessaemay/status/1279138625242963968
sanrio is a big big corporation, it wouldnt matter. murakami is just one person, and selling the kaikai kiki flower design is stealing from him. HOWEVER, rainbow flowers inspired by murakami's kaikai kiki are not the same. Inspired flowers need to have a distinction though.
and if you do decide to diy something with the murakami flower, as long as its for you only its alright! just dont profit off of it.
think of it this way: selling hello kitty icons or stickers is like stealing from a billionaire and selling this kaikai kiki flower is like stealing from an artist who runs an etsy shop.
and to end this thread if ur using the symbol as inspiration, "Steal like an artist". Take a bit of the idea, but also turn it into your own by channeling in your creativity.
