Steady reminder that Greek-Orthodoxy NEVER existed until 1833 when King Otto INVENTED the Church of Greece.

Regardless of how atrocious the Ottomans were, no ethnic/linguistic groups disappeared during the 500 years of Ottoman Empire, unlike previous empires.

Thracians and Dacians disappeared during the Roman empire.

Macedonians were self-hellenised following self-hellenisation of Alexander the Greek (who rightly belongs to Greeks), thus entirely disappearing.

The Empire of the Romans (pejoratively renamed Byzantine Empire by the self-called Englightenment) forced Christian Identity on all, centrally aimed at wiping out Hellenism.
Justinian shut down all Hellenic schools, changed the name of the language from Ellinika to Romaika.

This in effect wiped out Hellenic Memory for 1500 years until 19th century when the Germans re-created it after the Roman Revolution of 1821 (renamed Greek Revolution by German and European elite).

The other effects of imposing single Christian Identity in the Empire of the Romans (pejoratively renamed as Byzantine Empire now) was the wiping out of other pagan identities, Latin, Illyrian, Phoenician, though NONE of these groups had Common Unified Identity by themselves.

For example, Illyrian Identity was created by Rome when it forced all Illyrian Tribes into one common Roman Prefecture for management purpose, Albanopolis, being part of the Prefecture.

In effect Rome created the single Albanian Identity, the way we know it now.

So, when Ottomans invaded the Empire of the Romans entirely in 1453 invasion of Constantinople New Rome, they retained the Roman Model of Religious Identity.

That continued basically until Mustafa Kemal Ataturk had the idea of concentrating all European Muslims into one country.

Ataturk, Muslim Greek himself, INVENTED the Turkish Identity, following in the model of previous inventions like Greek Church, Kosovo is Serbia, Alexander the great was Slavic etc.

Being de facto atheist, he made Hagia Sophia a Museum after serving for 500 years as a mosque.

With the Lausanne Treaty in 1923, Greece and Turkey agreed to mutually ethnic cleanse each other, being founded as racist states refusing to accept that ethnic minorities exist, to this day.
Hagia Sophia becomes 100% internal matter of Turkey.

So, all in all, by international treaty, it is up to Turkish Gov to do whatever it pleases with Hagia Sophia.
