I have to say: I don’t think having Trump speak for American history does much good. Much the opposite: it makes people look more skeptically at our past. https://twitter.com/karol/status/1279257415838584837
In different hands, the history feels different. https://twitter.com/seantrende/status/1279228569449881605?s=21 https://twitter.com/seantrende/status/1279228569449881605
In Trump’s hands, people aren’t going to be inclined to find the good in the founding fathers. People don’t believe—with very good reason I might add—that Trump actually respects what was good in these men.
I can’t think of a worse spokesman for what America is supposed to stand for.
This is a good reason for reasonable conservatives to think long and hard about who they make the face of the movement. Someone who actually believed in the founding ideals could sell them. All Trump sells is that they’re old white guys.
Trump speaking for America’s history and past doesn’t inspire people to be proud of it. It makes people think of the worst of it
You really want to preserve our history? Find a better spokesperson for it. You want people to think the worst just to set up a culture war? Keep Trump.
I know this has turned into a rant, but we all know our nation’s past is complicated. It was built by complicated, flawed people. *Is Trump the guy to be the face of it today?* We need someone to speak for the decent part. Is Trump the guy for that?
