I come bearing opinions. Ok. So there are so many great ways to start. But the nerd in me suggests 1. Get a book...I'm a super fan of the "24-Hour Wine Expert". 2. Get a couple of good starter bottles of cheapish, good wine. I recommend Bogle Red Blend 2017 (about $10-12);
As weird as it sounds, Barefoot has a really good organic chardonnay that's a nice white. Not sure of the price, but my mom buys it and we are cheap, so its probably $6-8.; Mondavi also had an excellent Meritage in 2015 or 2016, but there more recent years are still solid.
In my opinion, and from what I've read, if you are looking for a good bang for your buck, go for a mid-range bottle from a newer wine region (like Argentina, New Zealand, Chile...) as opposed to a pricier bottle from the old world (read France, Italy) or California.
