To be clear: fuck Confederate monuments.

And...I can’t help but notice that some of the same people who agree with me on that...

Are also responding to #cancelHamilton with “omg it’s just a play it’s not meant to be 100% accurate”
On the one hand, we’re fighting against racists who claim that confederate flags and monuments “are just heritage, don’t erase history” bc we know that’s bullshit and protects a false, whitewashed history...
And on the other hand, we’re really going to read insights from Black people explaining the problematic aspects within Hamilton that whitewash American history and minimize the truth of slavery and say “it’s just a play, don’t erase my entertainment”?
You’re not even being asked to do much in the #cancelHamilton discussion. Listen. Learn. Reflect. We can’t say #BlackLivesMatter and when confronted with something that targets our indulgences say “I’ll sit this one out”
But maybe that’s the thing...if white people arent being asked to do much, ie things that are measurable, notable, photographable, and/or with room for leadership growth, we opt to sit out.
White supremacy isn’t just in what we do: it’s in our bones, our fascia, our DNA. So if we resist hearing Black-led conversations that disrupt our sense of entertainment and comfort, listen for if it’s actually white supremacist cells in our bodies resisting truth.
If BIPOC are speaking about justice and not asking white people to do something, that’s not an invitation to interject or sit out. It’s a time to sit up. There is still work for us to do to excavate and eradicate white dominance: It’s within ourselves.
