Some thoughts on the #TUPD discourse- TUPD kept me safe repeatedly. Because they’re a function of @Trinity_U, they can enforce criminal no trespass orders with lower threat thresholds than a restraining order would take and that was invaluable to me while dealing with my stalker.
Cpl. Hernandez also gave me free legal advice on getting a restraining order, which the title IX department didn’t know. Is that worth making students on Trinity’s campus feel unsafe, like #TUPD does in a lot of instances? No. Ofc not. But it feels reductive
to act like #TUPD does nothing for students. I feel safer w them on campus at night. Its bc I’m a white woman. Rn we don’t all get that safety but we deserve it. Part of this conversation needs acknowledge the good things we need to replace if we abolish a group, esp bc in all
reality we aren’t going to get #TUPD abolished and so the discourse, and how we have it, and what nuance we allow and welcome, and what space we create, is really probably the most lasting effect we’ll get for now.
