I’ve been seeing people boycotting the Hamilton musical for it’s romanticization of America’s problematic founding fathers and while their concerns are valid and understandable, there is a reason why Hamilton is loved in the liberal arts industry and among the general public. 1/?
For one, the musical brought attention to a forgotten founding father, Alexander Hamilton. Of course the musical should not be quoted for accurate history lessons but it does remind viewers that there’s a lot to history that is forgotten. 2/?
Then there’s the unique idea of having poc act as WHITE historical figures. It juxtaposes the fact that most of the figures portrayed would oppose slave liberation and equality towards other races while current day, all races are co-existing in societies. 3/
Personally I think the musical wouldn’t have gotten that much recognition and praise if it weren’t for the casting. 4/
Also the music? It’s amazing! It really highlights how bits and pieces can be recycled to have the show connect for a smooth and seamless flow. The reprises are prime examples because you have the flame from the first half to the sadness and defeat in the second half 5/
I’m not an expert in theater production but as a casual fan of musicals, the amount of effort put by the ensemble and tech really made the show, along with the set up. It reminds me of The Color Purple’s reuse of chairs throughout its show. It’s little details that makes it great
I haven’t really touched on the greatness that is the vocal arrangements because that alone could be a whole 10 page essay but as a former performer, those overlapping parts are DIFFICULT. It’s also satisfying to hear.
But overall, I’m glad Hamilton was made accessible because not everyone has the privilege to afford broadway tickets. I was lucky enough to see it live by a touring cast but that was due to Hamilton’s partnership with public schools. That was a privilege itself.
I do have to add that Disney’s timing of the removal of free-trials does oppress the marginalized group of families that can not afford to spend money on subscriptions for streaming services. That issue should not be overlooked
But yes! It’s okay to enjoy a musical that was made to put a musical twist on history as long as we as viewers understand that the musical is not a proper source of history. Nor does it excuse the wrongdoings of the founding fathers.
This thread was also not made to invalidate the voices of activists because their opinions are valid! I just made it to explain as to why some people can overlook the underlying controversies of Hamilton
