🇺🇲Watergate Ghost🇺🇲
May 31, 1976 at the Watergate hotel located in Washington DC is where this tale begins. At 4:45am, actress Diane Ladd was awoken being shoved on the shoulder. She was alone in the room. As she opened her eyes she sees a golden glow in the figure of a woman...
1) Diane Ladd was in DC to perform the onstage play of "Lu Ann Hampton Laverty Oberlander" which is a trilogy of plays. Very popular at the time. He startled awakening would keep her awake during most of the play and worried she would give less than stellar perfomance later...
2) During the third act later that evening she is on the huge stage alone. Before she was about to speak she feels someone walk up beside her (there's nobody there). She repeatedly stated she FELT someone there even though there wasnt anyone on stage...
3) In attendance at the Kennedy Center is about 1500, waiting for Diane to speak her lines. She takes a deep breath and before she says a word, someone else speaks. The female's voice tells Diane, "Chose you... Must... Martha...". Then silence. The play continued after that...
4) June 1st, 1976, the next morning Diane gives a television interview at WTTG in DC. The show host was none other than Maury Povich at the time. Diane states, "Maury, do you know anybody named Martha?" He says, "Oh my God, oh my God, you're the one. You'll tell the truth". 💥
5) Daine asks, "Who's story?"

Maury says, "Martha Mitchell"

Diane replies, "Martha Mitchell? Attorney General John Mitchell's wife? The crazy old alcoholic?"

Maury replies, "She's the one who brought them all down. She's the one who did it." (1972 Nixon Scandle)
6) Diane Ladd tells Maury Povich that if he sets up the meeting between Diane and Martha Mitchell she will gladly meet her. Maury, a little taken aback by Diane's reply states flatly, "You can't meet her.... she died. Yesterday morning at 4.30am." Diane was stunned at the info...
7) Martha Mitchell was the wife of John Mitchell, United States Attorney General under President Richard Nixon. She became a controversial figure with her outspoken comments about the government at the time of the Watergate scandal.
8) When Nixon was elected president in 1968, he appointed John Mitchell as his Attorney General. The position made the Mitchell family move to Washington DC, and their home in the "fashionable" Watergate complex, at the time, was estimated to be worth US $140,000...
9) Martha first came to national attention after she remarked to a television reporter that "Washington DC peace demonstrations in November 1969 reminded her husband of a Russian revolution". The statement increased her notoriety and coverage in the media, to which Martha craved
10) Martha had a custom of having an evening drink, and then calling reporters with political gossip or information she has gleaned while rifling through her husband's papers or eavesdropping on his conversations. During this time, Mitchell's renown as an outspoken socialite grew
11) Nixon selected John to head the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CRP) for the 1972 campaign.  During the campaign, however, Martha had begun to complain to her media contacts that the campaign had engaged in "dirty tricks" to win the election...
12) One week before the 1972 burglary of the DNC headquarters in the Watergate office building, the Mitchells had traveled to Newport Beach, CA to attend a series of fundraising events. While there, John received a call about the incident and immediately denied CRP involvement...
13) John returns to Washington DC, encouraging his wife to remain in California to "enjoy the sunny weather".  John enlisted their security guard Steve King (former FBI agent) to prevent her from learning about the break-in or contacting any reporters.

This is where things go 👇🏽
14) Martha acquires a copy of the Los Angeles Times and learns that James W. McCord Jr., the security director of the CRP and her daughter's bodyguard and driver, were among those arrested. This conflicted with the White House's official story that the break-in was not the CRP...
15) Thursday, on June 22, 1972 Martha makes a late-night phone call to Helen Thomas of the United Press. Martha informed Thomas of her intention to leave her husband until he resigned from the CRP. The phone call, however, abruptly ended....
16) When Thomas called back, the hotel operator told her that Mrs Mitchell was "indisposed" and would not be able to talk. In her subsequent report of the incident, Thomas said that it was apparent someone had taken the phone from Martha and heard her say, "You just get away!"
17) A few days later, Marcia Kramer, a veteran crime reporter of the New York Daily News, tracked Martha to the Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York. Kramer found "a beaten woman" who had "incredible" black and blue marks on her arms, held captive in the California room...
18) After several attempts to escape from the balcony, she was physically accosted by five men, which had left her needing stitches. Herb Kalmbach, Nixon’s personal lawyer, was called to the hotel and decided to call a doctor to inject Martha with an unknown tranquilizer...
19) Nixon aides, in an effort to discredit Martha, told the press that she had a "drinking problem"...which was not entirely untrue. They also suggested Marths was convalescing in Silver Hill Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Connecticut (remember reporters found her in NY!!!).
20) Martha was outspoken about the corruption in the GOP. In May 1976 (the very same month of her death), she provided a sworn deposition to attorney Henry B. Rothblatt in connection with the Democratic party's $6.4 million civil suit against the CRP...
21) In her final days, Martha existed on donations sent by sympathetic supporters. On May 31, 1976, in the advanced stages of multiple myeloma, Martha slipped into a coma and died at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City at age 57 at 4:30am.
22) One thought that keeps running through my mind on all of this is:

When Diane Ladd told Maury Povich the name "Martha" - How did Povich know Diane was talking about Martha Mitchell?

Was Maury visited by Martha like Diane was at 4:45am also???
