#MountRushmore features Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and TR. They all said things that are relevant to Trump. This thread presents some of them. Unless otherwise noted, page references are to : https://www.amazon.com/American-Fake-Patriotism-Donald-Trump/dp/1538129256
In his Farewell Address, George Washington mentioned a proverb that Benjamin Franklin had coined: “I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy.” (p.23)
Also in Washington's Farewell Address: “It is substantially true that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government." (p. 119)
Washington warned against running up government debt, “ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burden which we ourselves ought to bear.” (p. 145)
“This I hope will be the age of experiments in government,” Jefferson wrote, “and that their basis will be founded in principles of honesty, not of mere force.” Or as Jefferson wrote another time, “The whole art of government consists in the art of being honest." (pp. 23-24)
Lincoln on what would happen if Know-Nothings took over: "When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretense of loving liberty - to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy." (p. 66)
Lincoln on Stephen Douglas's indifference to slavery: "he is blowing out the moral lights around us . . . penetrating the human soul and eradicating the light of reason and the love of liberty in this American people.” (p. 21)
Lincoln on lawsuits: "Discourage litigation. Persuade your neighbors to compromise whenever you can." http://www.abrahamlincolnonline.org/lincoln/speeches/lawlect.htm
TR: "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." https://tinyurl.com/yczyjvvg
It's a pretty good guess that Trump won't quote any of these lines.
