In defense of the chess scene at the start of Code Geass:

I've heard criticism of this scene saying that it lazily makes Lelouch look like a genius without actually showing the method of his victory. In my opinion, it's a perfectly valid decision to not show how Lelouch won the
game of chess at the start of the series. From the start, they wanted to create a mysterious aura around Lelouch's intelligence to tell us that he's playing with people and not struggling in the slightest to beat them in mind games. They want to create a magical feeling around him
That is managed by showing just the end result without the struggle: A humiliating and sudden defeat for his adversary has more effect than a long and detailed chess scene. If they had shown in detail how he beat the guy at chess, the magic would have been dispelled with realism
and the audience would be more focused on how the guy who lost was an incompetent rather than on how Lelouch is a genius. The general audience couldn't be expected to understand the intricacies of a long and dragged out chess scene. They decided to focus on showing other stuff
and keeping the magical feeling of Lelouch and I think that's ok
I'm generally not the guy to care about specific scenes and maybe my logic is flawed and my redaction may be crap cause I didn't double check and maybe I repeated myself but who cares
