I’m so thankful for all of the Black women who have been speaking out across the journalism industry to demand change. But the labor needs to stop falling on Black women.
If you want to be an ally, if you want to “protect Black women,” if you want to use your platform for the better, please speak up. Do something.
. @AntoinetteIsama @ivieani @kokothenut @seenahgee @ThatgirlXanan + co. shouldn’t have had to relive their trauma on the TL and create a whole campaign to be protected, to receive support.
. @TracieHunte shouldn’t have to spend several days, weeks writing our letter to WNYC management. That is unpaid labor.
The Black women at Refinery29 shouldn’t have had to create #blackatr29 to see change happen.
#BlackFemaleAnonymous whew. I can’t even imagine how those Black women are feeling right now.
#BlackatLAT I didn’t forget about y’all.
Anyways, I could go on. The bare minimum is a tweet. That’s just the bare minimum. The work needs to also happen offline. Show your support and protect Black women irl.
One last thing: if you haven’t already, check out this thread. I wouldn’t be at WNYC without Diane. And It’s another example of a Black woman doing all of the emotional/physically taxing work to demand change within this industry. https://twitter.com/dianejeanty/status/1279175049124229125?s=21">https://twitter.com/dianejean... https://twitter.com/dianejeanty/status/1279175049124229125">https://twitter.com/dianejean...
