My take from sources on #Iran move tonight. /Seems to be crystal clear that Iran formally triggered dispute mechanism this time, having failed to explicitly make that move in the past despite Iranian claims they had. Hence the @JosepBorrellF letter/This is not being read...-1-
as first step in a move to killing off the deal. Not a major escalation in that sense. But it does raise the pressure on the Europeans. In the words of one diplomat, it seems intended to make Europe chose between U.S. and Iran, that there's no "middle path." At same time, it's-2-
a useful gesture at home to deflect pressure. One hardline Iran newspaper is calling it Iran's counter-attack. So it may be serving a useful domestic purpose//Does seem clear the E3 safeguards past nuclear work resolution opened path to this. Iran specifically reffered to that-3-
So long story short, this is probably not the beginning of the end. But it will further complicate a very messy, uncertain, volatile period for Iran and for E3 and US in handling Iran over the summer.-4-
