Climate Twitter I need your help. I have a relative that sincerely does want to be educated about climate change and is trying to research “both sides” so he can make an informed decision on where he stands.
We’ve had long talks about it but he still is not on board. While he does accept that the Earth is warming, he has not yet been convinced that humans are the cause of it.
He’s read a book by some random retired environmental engineer that tries to disprove climate change using what could be mistaken by non-scientists as “valid science” and so I see how he is swayed. I’ve directed him to other text I’ve used in classes and yet he still
finds that his book that “disproves” climate change makes more sense to him and has more convincing arguments. He isn’t trying to be a climate denier, he truly does want to learn and know what the truth is, but he needs help in getting there.
While I do have my own education and expertise in meteorology, climate, and atmospheric chemistry, there is also only so much that I know since I cannot be a full expert in every sub-field. Also, as many of us are aware, climate communication and science communication can be very
difficult. Do any of you other climate scientists, atmospheric chemists, paleoclimate scientists, and climate communicators out there know of any particular resources that can explain EXACTLY how we know that humans have caused climate change - and is scientifically convincing,
yet also understandable by a non-scientist? I could point him to peer reviewed literature but that would only do so much since he is not in this field. My relative is a well educated man though, and so he wouldn’t be convinced by “simple articles”. He still needs some form of
advanced science to convince him. I’m hoping to be able to find some other books, media, or articles that may help educate him properly. He is sincere about wanting to understand climate science which is why I want to help him. Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
