Most girls had a crush on Sasuke, but none was so enfatuated with him like Sakura was. She ended her relationship with Ino and always sat next to Sasuke since chapter 3, even in the Academy.
Naruto's crush has always been portrayed as comic relief and was implicated as a rivalry with Sasuke since ch.3, even in the first databook. You just have to see his reaction everytime Sakura rejected him and compare it when Hinata did.
Sasuke reacting aggressively when Sakura was injured while Naruto merely paying attention to her new haircut. Sasuke observing something is worrying Sakura and cheering her up later, while Naruto didn't even realize it, showing us how little he observes her.
She even recognized to Sasuke (Naruto) that she would do anything to have his acknowledgement.
Sasuke ordering Naruto to protect her from Gaara,because Naruto, after 5 chapters witnessing Sakura being literally crushed by Gaara, didn't even bothered to ask Kyubi for help as he already did vs Neji or when Sasuke "died".Only when Sasuke asked him, he decided to give his all
Rock Lee flirting with her and Naruto is more concern about Sasuke. These are just some examples showing how empty and superficial his crush always was.
Naruto never cried for Sakura, he never fought for her, he never enpathized with her unless Sasuke was involved, despite both sharing themes that could have got them closer. Such as his rivalry with Sasuke or she worried for her master.
He didn't even awake the kyubi just for her, like he did for Sasuke and Hinata.Does Naruto even know Sakura's inferiority complex regarding them?Because some panels imply he doesn't,even Sakura was offended by Naruto's comment in the war.That's how much he was interested in her.
There've been some times when he could have accidentally killed her and he didn't even apologized to her.He spoke to her rudely when she was just worry for him and Sasuke.All this contrast when we see him cry in relief when he knew Hinata was alive and didn't kill her in K mode.
Naruto grew up without affection and love,surrounded by hatred and that was what made him empathize with Sasuke,who considered his rival because Naruto saw him as the kind of person he wanted to be. He had everything Naruto wanted: affection,admiration,attention, acknowledgement.
