Wei Wuxian walking away at the end of CQL is gut-wrenching for a number of reasons, but one of the worst is this:

"Off I go with only wine and a donkey, nothing permanent holding me down, I'm totally fine."

No, nope, all you want in life is a steadfast home, stop lyyyyying.

Everyone thinks WWX is so wild and untethered (untamed!), made to cast off society and do his own thing.

But the worst thing is even HE comes to believe it. He thinks he's the maverick built to be alone when in truth all he wants is a place to belong, a place that wants him.

But he thinks he's not entitled to that so he removes himself from the equation and makes sure people don't feel bad if they need to cast him off, because he's fine! He's Wei Wuxian, destined to wander and walk his path alone, no picket-fence for him, ahahaha. Ha. Ha.

(And there are people who try to tell him he does have a place to belong - JYL, JC, LWJ - but he never fully believes them. How could he when as a child JFM told him, 'this is your home now' only for WWX to turn around and hear YZY say, 'no. it's not. and don't ever forget it.')
