I re-read this thread every so often and think about how much the debate has shifted since I was in college thinking the not-even-a-decade-since-it’s-collapse USSR was the only alternative to selling my body and mind to the highest bidder.

And I had the benefit of living with beautiful, generous people who had lived under a rather intense communist regime (DDR) and even when they told me it wasn’t as bad as I’d heard for normal people I still clung to the stories I was told. It’s insane and infuriating.

When I really learned about the Solidarity! Movement in Poland and found out it was about protesting the govt for not being socialist enough — not allowing more workplace democracy — it was THEN that I knew I’d stumbled upon an economic debate worth engaging
