seeing a bunch of people “normalize” mental health or whatnot and while i suppose it’s all to the good i want to tell em and every1 like: it’s not just you. there’s really something wrong. it’s not just you have a shitty brain, it’s been put in an incredibly hostile environment.
getting us to internalize that if we don’t thrive according to corporate defined metrics of success and vitality then we have a disease is really one of the greatest tricks of capitalism.
idk what percentage of the economy you could say is purely affect management but it’s probably more than one third? maybe? the world is designed to make you feel like shit because that gives you an incredible probability of buying something.
individualism and capitalism tells us that our good and bad qualities are the result of our natural constitution and our own choices. neither are.
but like if you put a dog in a room and just torture it it will act super crazy eventually. this is us, our whole lives lol. the human nervous system did not grow up to anticipate this kind of stimulation.
because the tv doesn’t kill or physically harm you in a way that’s visible we ran an experiment on our society with it for 70 years and literally everyone went insane. if you talk about this people look at you like you just hyped the hollow earth.
anyway i say all this with love and hopefully not with condescension. as a “mentally ill” individual myself i don’t wish to lean into an equally neoliberal narrative of self help and transformation within narrowly prescribed corporate limits. but it feels a lot better for me.
to know that like.... it’s not really anything wrong with me. if anything it’s indicative of some kind of deficit if your brain doesn’t buck when exposed to this fucking nightmare. some manage it more easily than others i suppose.
