For me, Hamilton started as a musical experience. My sons, 11 at the time, kept freestyling acapella as I'd drop them off for school... "How does the bastard. Orphan. Son of a whore and a Scotsman..." What are you listening to?
Oh "Hamilton." The play that everyone is raving about. But here's the thing. Everyone raves about Broadway plays. "I saw it with the original cast," was one of the Bougie humblebrags, like those Black Dog Tavern t-shirts....So when I downloaded it I didn't expect much...
..but was blown the fuck away. The sheer genius. The voices. The attitude. How the whole thing takes on a deeper meaning when you hear Busta Rhymes "Dungeon Dragon" growl inside of Hercules Mulligan's verbal cadence.....
Or battle cipher bragaddocio within songs about the formation of the Constitution, and the same actors switching roles and voices, like Biggie and Slick Rick...
The emotions, the humor, the drama....it's the first cast recording where I had a palpable reaction that felt like I was seeing the play....But then when I finally saw it, even without the original cast, nothing prepares you for actually seeing it on its feet....
And that's why everyone is shutting down to watch #HamiltonFilm . Not only do you finally get to see it with the voices that have grown so familiar, you get to see the stage movements, the lighting...it's like a symphony on a stairmaster....
But the seamless transitions and the visual cues are going to start showing up in live action films. It's a stunning, staggering achievement, and I'm in awe of everyone involved.
