FOR ASPIRING VO ACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN IT COMES TO RATES (a thread):
When actors are starting it can be hard to get work cuz we don’t have experience. There are established industry rates. Just because you are new doesn’t mean you should be taking a lower rate. (1/5)
In showbiz, some celeb actors will get more than the base minimum. But a lot of established VO actors work for minimum. We aren’t more expensive. So new actors coming in at below this rate, can push the minimum rate down for everyone. Once studios can find cheap actors... (2/5)
...some won’t want to pay actors more. Non-union actors have to pay for their own health insurance, taxes, save their own retirement. So the non-union rates are actually even cheaper than what they appear because no benefits are provided. (3/5)
It’s easy to think that you are only paying for an actors time. But you are paying for all of the actors training, which cost time and money. I’ve seen countless of newer actors who take low rates miss opportunities from casting directors because we know who is paying what. (4/5)
When people hear an actor is willing to work on cheap jobs, they can think “oh they must not be very good” or “they must not be professional”. It can take years to change people’s impression of you. So think about the longevity of your career. You may be harming yourself.
