conversion therapy in the UK is up for debate. the fact that conversion therapy in the UK is still legal practice is fucking terrifying. it needs to be made illegal, so here’s a short thread to help educate yourself.
conversion therapy has widely been condemned across the UK by a number of bodies, including the UK Council for Psychotherapy, The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and The Royal College of Psychiatrists.
"It is exploitative for a psychotherapist to offer treatment that might 'cure' or 'reduce' same sex attraction as to do so would be offering a treatment for which there is no illness."
sexual identity isn’t something you can simply “change.” exploring and understanding your sexuality can be terrifying enough on its own, without fear of conversion therapy.
it encourages prejudice and discrimination which shouldn’t have any presence in society today.

our own governments survey of over 108000 LGBTQ+ people found that 5% of people have been offered conversion therapy (that’s 5400 people) and 2% had undergone it (2160 PEOPLE!)

conversion therapy feeds off vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community to suppress who they really are. the detrimental impact it can have on someone’s mental health is terrifying.
so WHY is this still legal? this shouldn’t even be up for debate. if this was the other way round it wouldn’t even be considered. the government needs to focus its efforts on being allies and help our LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters feel safe and loved
tories, changing your profile picture for pride month simply isn’t enough. make the fucking change and don’t turn a blind eye to the horrors that are going on behind closed doors.
this is about 45 minutes research i did and i’m sure it didn’t even scratch the surface. if there’s anything to add please educate me.
i’m sorry there’s no pretty pictures or rainbows in this thread, but things like this shows why pride is still important in 2020. we still have a long way to go.
