THREAD: HQ 399 Volleyball Moments

Last week’s chapter is jam-packed with awesome volleyball moments: Hinata’s dig and service ace, Kageyama’s power tip to the back court and awesome back set from the free zone.

Let’s break down some of these moments:
1. Hinata& #39;s Dig

In Chapter 398, Hinata digs Ushijima twice! The first one is an overpass, while the second dig is perfect.
From the first panel of chapter 399, you see Atsumu set Thomas a quick play. The fact that Atsumu was able to set up a quick is testament to how excellent Hinata’s dig is.
2. Hinata& #39;s service ace

What makes this amazing is he targets the libero which is something servers avoid because liberos are usually the best receivers. However, Hinata serve placement right at the corner is perfect and Heiwajima lets the ball go thinking it was out.
3. Ushijima& #39;s service ace

You can see MSBY has 4 passers (something Adlers did earlier in the match, 391). However, Ushijima’s strong jump serve goes between two passers (Inunaki and Bokuto) leading to an ace. Disadvantage of adding a receiver = more gaps
4. Atsumu& #39;s serve

Atsumu chooses to do a float serve (I think) and targets the seam between Heiwajima and Hoshiumi. Both passers react to the ball leading to an excellent receive.
These three serves highlight the importance of good serve placement.

Power + placement + unpredictability = difficult serve
5. Kageyama& #39;s power tip

AH YES MY FAVORITE PLAY.

Most setter dumps goes to the center of the court and they are usually undetectable because the setter will have both their arms up until the last minute.
Compared to a conventional setter dump, Kageyama immediately reveals his intentions by bringing down his right arm early.
Players in floor defense immediately sees this and reacts accordingly by moving forward because they’re expecting it to go to the center, just behind the blocker.
However, Kageyama knows that the opponent has read his supposed play and pushes the ball deep into the back court. Sakusa, Atsumu, and Inunaki are far too forward when they realize that Kageyama baited them.
Now for a real world parallel:

My example for this play is not a setter dump but a tip by the opposite hitter (Sheilla Castro of BRAZIL) against USA at the London 2012 Finals.

Watch the whole rally and the slow motion replay!
You can see this from the way her arms extend early and the position of her fingers. It is clear that she will tip the ball. The US blocker immediately recognizes this and does not continue her block (notice how she flexes her arm to avoid touching the tip)
The US libero anticipates the drop behind the blockers and starts to move forward. Sheilla pushes the ball high and deep into the back court. At this moment, the libero is too far forward and doesn’t have time to pedal back to dig the ball.
Another thing that’s amazing about this play? Sheilla also did this play 4 years earlier at the Beijing 2008 Finals against the same team and same libero.
In both plays (Kageyama and Sheilla), the player takes advantage of the reading skills of the opponent and uses it against them. That& #39;s volleyball mind games for you.
6. Kageyama& #39;s set from the free zone

This play is really just about Kageyama& #39;s presence of mind and spatial awareness.

This play is possible only if (a) the overpass goes outside the antenna (as opposed to in between the two antennae) as depicted in the photo bellow,
(b) Kageyama& #39;s foot does not cross the opponent court (orange part) completely, and (c) Kageyama sets it outside the antennae (again, as opposed to in between the two antennae).
Kageyama reacts to the overpass quickly, chases the ball by safely crossing the net, and back sets the ball to an available hitter (we even have the return of the Kageyama precision grid lol).

Of course, this play wouldn& #39;t be as awesome if Hoshiumi didn& #39;t kill it.
Okay now for a nice example.

Watch this rally from the finals of the Italian Volleyball League 2013 and the amazing (and familiar) finish by setter Raphael de Oliveira and spiker Jan Stokr.

Enjoy!
So that wraps it up for this week!
