We got it entirely wrong. Police shouldn’t be given more leeway to lie, hurt, maim, & kill. They should be held to far higher standards. Face more accountability. Heavier consequences than civilians.

This is not inevitable. We don’t have to continue this way. We can be safer, healthier, & more cost efficient as a society w/ alternatives to police. And for as long as police continue to be the “solution” to all societal ills, we can push to hold them meaningfully accountable.

As for the first — alternatives to policing — I’m not just talking about for health issues like substance abuse disorder, mental health, & poverty. Violence is a public health issue too.
