Let’s talk about “codes” y’all.

You’re at a con. Someone’s making you uncomfortable, not necessarily scared, but you wanna discreetly leave the party and go to your room without making a scene.

Ask me for a “Diet Coke”.

I will escort you to a safe, quiet place.
You feel unsafe. You need an escort to con staff or friends.

Ask me for a “Juice Box”
My friends and I will walk with you.

If you don’t want anyone to ask questions, just say “(drink) with no ice”

I don’t care if I know you or not, you can use my codes.
Codes are so important. My mother and I came up with “Diet Coke” and “Juicebox”. The “no ice” part is from bartending/waiting tables.

I encourage you to come up with safe codes with trusted friends you’re always around, someone you can text or call, or simply talk to at a party.
Safe codes help people discreetly leave unsavory situations without further escalation. Sometimes victims needs space to process, sometimes it’s as simple as being out of emotional spoons. Whatever the reason, have codes. Have a trusted group. Never go alone.
Cover your drinks with your hand at all times. Never leave a drink unattended. Never let someone make you a drink unless you’re watching them or trust them. Only open your own cans/bottles. If you leave your drink, toss it and get a new one.
I think cons should host “smart partying and socializing” panels and I plan on hosting one at the next con I go to. These things can save lives, spare folks from trauma, and encourage us to help eachother.

If you need ideas or wanna pick my brain, please feel free ❤️
