I’ve always wanted to write about immigrant families and all the funny cultural stuff that goes down when someone marries the first white person. I remember when my cousin got married, there was so much drama over the wedding...
My family is huge. His fiancé sent out 100+ invites to us & expected RSVPs. Our family didn’t understand the custom so no one responded. My aunts actually got insulted 😂 “Why would we not attend the wedding?...What kind of family does she think we are?”
A few weeks before the wedding the bride was freaking out b/c she didn’t have a head count for the reception hall caterer. I tried talking to my family. My tias were like “Ay mija, at our parties, the food never runs out. Tell her don’t worry. We’ll bring a big pot of tamales.”
Finally, I told the bride to just mark everyone as “attending” And to also note that my family would likely be inviting more people. ‘Cause that’s just how they roll. In the end, everything worked out & we all learned a lot about each other’s customs 😂
I’m curious to know what other immigrant families have experienced with these kinds of unions...
