Today, in 1863, the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment were reorganizing after suffering 82% casualties, over 215 killed or wounded, charging into an advancing Rebel Brigade on the Second Day of Gettysburg. Destiny once more called upon these men: they had to face Pickett's Charge
The grand Rebel assault only broke through at a few places on Cemetery Ridge, but one place was defended by the survivors of the 1st Minnesota. Once more, these brave men charged into the barrels of the enemy, breaking their attack, capturing the colors of 28th Virginia Infantry.
The blood-soaked Rebel banner was brought back to Minnesota. For years afterwards, Virginia has repeatedly requested, begged, and threatened to get this flag back.
