Why we gotta argue over cartoons? Anime and 'toons can be great and can learn a lot from each other. OP is right. It's tiresome. But I agree that a lot of fans on both sides tend to not watch lesser known works. So here's a thread of non-mainstream animation, Japanese and Western https://twitter.com/spacefunkyarp/status/1278541344651251717
Gregory Horror Show

A CGI horror cartoon about a rat named Gregory. There are five volumes, all of which revolving around themes of self-hatred, morality, and the macabre. The episodes are usually few-minute long shorts. 4/5 volumes are available for free on YT.
Also, check out DYKG's video on Capcom's PlayStation 2 adaptation of the first volume.
Pink Floyd - The Wall

An adaptation of the rock bands 1979 album. It follows the traumatic life of a rockstar that leads up to one hell of a meltdown. Though only about 1/2 is animated, the grotesque animation is the most memorable part of this unforgettable movie.
The movie is available for purchase on DVD.

Be warned though, the movie is a bit intense. Aside from the intentionally wretched animation, themes of racism, fascism, and self harm are present in this movie. I'd recommend listening to the album first to gauge your interest.
The Breadwinner

An adaptation of a novel by Deborah Ellis. It's about a young Afghan girl dressing up as a boy to provide for her all girl family after her father is imprisoned. The movie takes place during the Taliban's control of Afghanistan and portrays the issue tastefully.
I know this movie was Oscar-niminated, but it isn't talked about nearly as much as the other movie about ethnic culture from that year, Coco. Breadwinner is drenched in Middle Eastern customs, fashion, and folklore.

The movie's available for digital purchase or through Netflix.
The Laughing Salesman

An adaptation of a manga by Fujiko Fujio. It's about the titular salesman and his clients. He offers them a better life based on advice or conditions. When his clients inevitably wrong him, the Salesman ruins their lives and leaves to search for more.
If you like like the morality tale episodes of Twilight Zone or Black Mirror, look into it. It's like they took an interesting Twilight Zone premise and took it in every interesting direction they could.

The 1989 anime (the good one) is only available through piracy, sadly.
Allegro non Troppo (Not Too Cheerful)

An Italian parody of Disney's "Fantasia." Though the live action segments are more extended in this version, the animated segments are just like Fantasia in format. Though it isn't Disney levels of quality, the animation is still charming.
The live action segments are a mockery of Disney and other animation studios' poor treatment of workers. The animated musical shorts range from comedic to tragic. They're also much more psychedelic and bizarre.

You can buy it on DVD (or watch it free: )
Belladonna of Sadness

tw// rape

A prog rock Japanese musical about a French girl who makes a pact with a demon to obtain power after she is raped and humiliated by their Baron and his courtiers. This film was inspired by a book called La Socíere, a history book for witchcraft.
This film features heavy erotic, violent, and psychedelic imagery. Though it was finished in 1973, it didn't see wide release until 2009. The film is available through digital purchase or for Blu-ray. Sorry, I couldn't find an actual free way to watch it.
Mary and Max

A story about two pen pals, an Australian 7-year-old named Mary and a formerly Jewish 44-year-old atheist with Asperger's Max. The movie follows them as they influence each other's lives and forge a stronger bond even as tension arises in their relationship.
There are themes of abuse, conversion therapy, shaming of the neurodivergent and overweight, isolation, suicide, and death. The movie can be quite sad, but the principal characters and those around them are so good. Available on Blu-ray, digital purchase, and Amazon Prime Video.
The Night is Short, Walk on Girl

A romcom based on a novel by Tomihiko Morimi. A young college man chases after his crush, an underclassman girl, on a unusually long night. Gods, submarines, drinking and eating contests, and bouts of guerilla theater await in this whimsical film
This movie reminds me a lot of Alice in Wonderland; a young girl coming across the crazy antics of those around her. It's just set in a cozy little Japanese town. That atmosphere and the many misadventures make this film so memorable. Available on Blu-ray and digital purchase.
When the Wind Blows

A British movie by Jimmy Murakami with music by Roger Waters (former Pink Floyd frontman). It's about an elderly, rural British couple during the Cold War. After surviving a nuclear attack, they wait in their home for help as they yield to radiation poisoning
The is film is based on a graphic novel by Raymond Briggs, who wrote the screenplay. David Bowie also did the title song. The movie's main set, the home, is a small-scale model with the animated characters added into scenes.

Available on DVD (only for Brits) or digital purchase.
Also, don't watch this if you don't wanna see two sweet elders slowly dying in a post apocalyptic wasteland. There's a fan dub of the original graphic novel on YouTube. You might want to watch that to gauge your interest in the movie:
