Saw this cartoon today about cops verses Frankenstein and it makes me mad. (thread)
Obviously the idea here is that the monster is crime. But what is also very obvious here is that the cartoonist has never read Frankenstein. All he knows is Karloff's portrayal. Frankenstein creates his "monster" then abandons it, not because it's ugly...
...but because he can't deal with the consequences of his own actions. As the creature learns to read and understands, he grows to hate the society he is surrounded by - because he is educated in what society COULD be - but all he sees around him is selfishness, from his creator.
The creature wants fairness. He wants law and order as its supposed to be. He wants to be treated like a human being, which he is - despite how he came into this world.
And when he doesn't get that - when he's not treated like the others around him, he rages. He embraces the chaos. He destroys the lives of others. He knows it's not the way it should be. But he also knows it's the only way he'll be heard.
The cartoonist inadvertently makes the case for the current situation. Law and order has failed so many of us...SOCIETY has failed so many of us, especially minorities. So we riot. We embrace the chaos, because that's the only way those who create us hear us.
I'll take the monster any day. (end thread)
