Remember that almost all the "bad choices" dealing with COVID-19 are actually bad policy at the highest levels. Restaurants are open and primary schools can't open safely because we aren't bailing out state governments. Universities are trying to open and not cutting tuition /1
because they aren't getting bailed out. Some restaurants and resorts are trying to lure tourists because they need the money. Increasing numbers of people need to leave the house and put themselves at risk to work because they need the money. /2
People don't wear masks indoors because we don't have rules in many states requiring it. People don't even know when they are supposed to wear masks because of very inconsistent messages from the White House. All these problems trace back to government policy. /3
That's why almost all other countries in the world, which believe me are populated by flawed human beings just like us, have handled COVID-19 better than us. It's not the people being uniquely dumb or nefarious. It's bad policy. /end
