1/7 a bit of a long read here - Following the debate about social media companies taking more responsibilty for harmful content, they are now lobbying for the UK/US trade agreement to force on us US laws which protect them from liability for what happens on their platforms
I raised in the Trade Bill debate @HouseofCommons the risk that the American negotiators would press for these 'section 230' provisions to be included in a deal with the UK, just as they did in their trade agreement with Mexico and Canada (USMCA)
Now the @InternetAssn_UK which includes @Facebook @Google @Snapchat @Twitter as members is actively lobbying for 'intermediary liability protections' in the UK/US trade deal
At a time when low tax online retailers are booming and higher taxed town centre businesses are closing the @InternetAssn_UK also wants the trade deal to put a stop to the proposed digital services tax
The @InternetAssn_UK also wants the trade deal to make it harder for people to take action when their copyright is broken online - a further blow to performers who currently can't perform to audiences in person @bpi_music
The @InternetAssn_UK policy paper also raises concerns that the trade deal could be used to allow US companies to process UK citizens data outside of our GDPR data protection rules
These are all important issues that deserve to be debated properly, but trade agreements shouldn't used to lock down important matters of policy to the advantage of a few big tech companies. Thanks @InternetAssn_UK for making it clear though, that that is what they want to do.
