I know we're all freaking out about the opened borders and all the lineups of visitors and such - I certainly am - but I want to do a counter-argument to the worry. I'm not usually a devil's advocate kind of guy so this will be a bit clunky but here goes ...
If we're talking about the Atlantic Bubble, there are currently 6 active cases for about 2 million people. Some say that real infection rates are 10x tested, so that's 60. That's still a fraction of a fraction of a percent. Lyme disease and Tuberculosis are likely more prevalent
So some Americans are getting in - as they always have been, it turns out. I wish we enforced 14 day quarantine with trackers and follow-up like they do in Australia and Korea etc rather than just some brochures at the border, but ...
The premier seemed to imply that most of these Americans are coming here to go to their cottages. They're certainly not coming here for music festivals and sports events, since there are none.
If they're in cottages or small towns, their chances of super-spreading are low. I worry that everyone is stocking up at Masstown Market before going into quarantine. But it turns out grocery stores don't show a lot of transmissions, even in hot zones.
Also, to be blunt: the kinds of people who can sail here in their boat or who own cottages near Chester or whatever are not in the demographics highest at risk of catching COVID. They probably aren't forced to live or work in cramped quarters with inadequate distancing or PPE
And even if visiting cottagers did manage to spread COVID into the community, the lack of superspreader events like crowded clubs, sports events, and Rich Aucoin concerts, means it'll be localized and fairly easy to lock down.
Something like 80% of our deaths and a huge amount of our cases were in care homes and especially Northwood - those have calmed down now and we know what to do to keep them safe.
We're a low density province, even in our cities and towns, and we're doing a fairly good job with distancing and masks - at least better than many places where it's become identity politics. Our outbreaks should remain relatively contained and manageable.
Anyhow those are my counter-arguments. In reality I want the Province to do WAY more testing, and to be super stringent on ensuring visitors from outside the Bubble self-quarantine properly. We've all sacrificed a lot to get to this point, and I don't want it all to be for naught
