Proteas 'High Performance' squad. A thread...
Noticeable exclusions:

1. Dale Steyn
2. Chris Morris
3. AB de Villiers

I think this could be an indication that they are unlikely to feature in the T20 World Cup later this year...
Positive inclusions: (1/5)

1. RAYNARD VAN TONDER - The leading run scorer in the 2019/20 4-day competition. He scored 843 runs in 8 games at an average of 70.25 for the Knights.

Age = 21
Career 4-day average = 55.15 (12 games)
Positive inclusions: (2/5)

2. MARQUES ACKERMAN- Arguably one of the most talented youngsters in the country. Ackerman was the 3rd highest run scorer in the 2019/20 4-day season with 660 runs at an average of 41.25

Age = 24
Career 4-day average = 48.17 (12 games)
Positive inclusions: (3/5)

3. PITE VAN BILJON - Averaged 63.30 in the 2019/20 season and was instrumental in the Tshwane Spartans journey to the final of the Mzanzi Super League.

Age = 34
Career 4-day average = 48.80 (40 games)
Positive inclusions: (4/5)

4. TONY DE ZORZI - Had a decent red ball season but has most likely been included for his 50 over form. He was the 4th highest run scorer in last seasons MODC with 479 runs at an average of 47.90.

Age = 22
Momentum One Day Cup average = 43.28
Positive inclusions: (5/5)

5. SISANDA MAGALA - One of the better death bowlers in South Africa at the moment. If he can overcome his fitness issues, there is no reason why he couldn't push for a World Cup spot.
Unluckiest to miss out:

Grant Roelofsen was the leading run scorer in the 50 over format (588 runs at 70.25) and 7th in the 4-day format (575 runs at 44.23) while also keeping wicket.

His exclusion speaks to the number of quality keeper-batsmen in SA at the moment...
Keeper-batsmen already in the squad:

1. Quinton de Kock
2. Rudi Second
3. Heinrich Klaasen
4. Kyle Verreynne

With Wandile Makwetu and Sinethemba Qeshile knocking on the door. Makwetu was instrumental for the Knights averaging 57 in the 4-day format last season while keeping...
My pecking order for RED BALL fast bowlers:

1. Kagiso Rabada
2. Anrich Nortje
3. Lungi Ngidi
4. Beuran Hendricks
5. Glenton Stuurman
6. Lutho Sipamla
7. Nandre Burger
Coetzee (19 years old) still needs a couple of seasons of 4-day cricket to grow and mature as a fast bowler, but having a kid that can bowl 140+ is always exciting.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in some T20 games but i'm glad to see him rubbing shoulders with the best in SA.
Dupavillon has yet to really cement his place in the Dolphins 4-day side but he looks very useful in the shorter formats (and in his debut against AUS).
I like the idea of leaving your test bowlers to play test cricket and picking 'white ball specialists'. It worked for England over the last 5 years so it could be something we adopt in SA.

Let KG, Nortje and Ngidi rest.
My pecking order for RED BALL opening batsmen:

1. Elgar
2. Markram
3. Moore
4. P.Malan
5. J.Malan
My pecking order for RED BALL keepers (in this squad)

1. de Kock
2. Second
3. Verreynne
4. Klaasen
Questions that need to be answered (1/6)

1. Do we need a test all-rounder or will we play with 7 specialist batsmen. if an all rounder is needed, who is that all-rounder?

Mulder? Pretorius? Phehlukwayo? Linde? Muthusamy?
Questions that need to be answered (2/6)

2. Who is our 3rd test seamer? Rabada and Nortje have (in my opinion) cemented themselves as the two frontline test quicks. Ngidi and Beuran Hendricks will need to compete for that final spot.
Questions that need to be answered (3/6)

3. Who will captain the test side? Elgar, Markram and Bavuma are the front runners. I'd like to see Markram get it but his place in the side (as well as the majority of our top 7) is questionable at the moment. He is the long term option.
Questions that need to be answered (4/6)

4. Who are our top 3 (in all formats) going FORWARD?

i.e. Once faf du Plessis retires.

Test: Elgar, Markram, Hamza
ODI: de Kock, Markram, Bavuma
T20: de Kock, Bavuma, van der Dussen
Questions that need to be answered (5/6)

5. In modern day 50 & 20 over cricket, is it too risky only playing five bowlers? If yes, who can bat in the top 6 and act as a 6th bowling option?

A big shortage of these in SA at the moment...
Questions that need to be answered (6/6)

6. One or two spinners in the shorter formats? With Tahir, Shamsi and Fortuin, the option of having two quality spinners in the same side is available to us.
