LACTOSE INTOLERANCE
This describes a group of symptoms caused by problems digesting and absorbing lactose.
Lactose is the main sugar found in diary products.
For lactose to be absorbed by the body, it must be broken down in the gut by a protein called LACTASE.
If there is a shortage of lactase, lactose cannot be broken down which can cause symptoms of lactose intolerance such as abdominal discomfort, bloating or gas, cramping and diarrhoea.
PREDISPOSING FACTORS
-Heredity
-Age (lactase production decreases with age)
-Ethnicity (African, Asian, Hispanic, & American Indian populations)
-Premature birth (infants born prematurely 28 & 32 week of gestation have low levels of lactase because the small don't develop....
Lactase-producing cells until the third trimester.
-Diseases affecting the small intestine (celiac, crohn disease)
-Cancer treatment
TREATMENT
the mainstay of treating lactose intolerance is reducing lactose-containing foods in the diet. Most clinicians and researchers agree that 12 to 15g of lactose (about 1 to 2 cups of milk) is generally tolerated by people with lactose intolerance. Milk and ice cream have
the highest level of lactose. Yogurt and cheese, especially hard cheese contain much lower amounts.
Lactose-reduced products, such as lactose-reduced milk are available. Clients are often advised to not completely eliminate dairy products, since they are important sources of
Calcium and vitamin D.
