Railways is not just a transport company. It has played a huge role in building society. Anyone who lived in Railway Quarters will tell you this. People of different castes, religions mixing together, the schools and hospitals it ran etc. From 2000 the destruction started.

Two years back I met Vinod Kumar Yadav, now he is the Chairman of Railway Board and at that time he was General Manager of SC Railway. Nice and humble person. Show us profits or privatise/shutdown seems to be instructions they all got.

And this destruction has been very strategic. Shutdown schools but tell all employees that you will reimburse private school fee. The employees will agree, because they can submit fake receipts and get more money.

Shutdown hospitals. All employees will agree. Why? Because they are promised that they will now get insurance and can get reimbursed in big corporate hospitals. And employees can claim sick leave certificates from private doctors. Used to be very strict medical examination before

Now the reality has struck. The employees have realised now it is their services which are under threat next. Too late. They might protect their employment with threat of strikes but who will bring back culture of service and commitment to society the organisation was known for?
