tw // violence + murder + rape + sexual violence + forced pregnancy + police violence + enslavement

thread of what's going on in kashmir at the moment.
if you don't know, let me explain. when India and Pakistan were partitioning in 1947 all the provinces and princely states voted. Muslim majorities went to pakistan and hindu majorities stayed with India. kashmir was a princely state with a Muslim and majority with a hindu ruler+
the ruler wanted to join India, the people wanted to join Pakistan. that's where the conflict began. after that the conflict continued both countries have fought for control because kashmir also happens to control water flow into Pakistan. the Indus river flows from there+
it's pakistan's major water supply and India wanted to manipulate it. the conflict was to be solved before the un but it never was. in August 2019 kashmir's special status under article 370 was revoked. the article let kashmir function on its own. it protected the people+
tw // abuse
since it was revoked over 100,000 troops have been deployed. sexual abuse, rape, enslavement, murder and etc is rampant. these people have been stripped of their basic rights like food and shelter. as well as education.
other common things are
-forced prostitution
-forced sterilization
-forced marriages and pregnancies
-people have also been shot with pellet guns and blinded
-police violence is also common
mosques are also shut down and people aren't allowed to go out and pray. there's lack of media coverage as well, everything from phone to wifi services were forced to shut down.
kashmir deserves independence. it was wrongfully colonized.
