Basically I do all this mentorship workshop stuff bc in my heart of hearts I was going to end up a teacher, but I can't handle groups of kids and I deeply, deeply want to create a culture of learning that undercuts art schools while providing similar benefits.
You literally could teach yourself comics for free with all the books and videos out there. So that part's covered. Now all you need is someone to go "mmmm...that one. Yeah, that too. Ok how about you draw something by friday with this in mind and we'll go from there."
It all used to work on this model! Before design schools. Apprenticeships, where young talents assist working artists, learn the trade, move on. It is, unfortunately, prone to tunnel-vision nepotism, but with intention can rival any formal arts education.
