A few people expressed concern about the context here. Instead of responding to everyone individually, I& #39;ll just say it once: students knew he was coming + consented, they were not required to accept the gift, & non-alcoholic drinks are 100% acceptable for their happy hour

I understand academia has a problematic relationship with alcohol, esp at conferences. I agree the broader conversation about this needs to continue. But as best I can tell, this is just a nice thing someone is doing for his students.
