we need to talk more about mental health among journalists and not less. i understand why many never speak publicly about it but i feel like sharing my experiences is the right thing for me and if it even helps one person it is worth it.
and while we talk a lot about the trauma from some reporting it's important to acknowledge that many of us bring unrelated trauma to the job.
The @DartCenter is a wonderful resource but it's incumbent upon newsrooms to do more whenever possible.
My dms and email are always open, tho i acknowledge i have some catching up to do in both, which i intend to do over the long weekend. We're all in this together and no one should feel alone in this.
I'll always be grateful to one of my first editors, @reedkath, for helping me through a massive anxiety attack in the middle of the newsroom. I wish more editors were like her.
oh and when i had another at @SRCCON a couple years ago, they recognized and helped me in every way. i will always be grateful to those folks and that conference, which is the most thoughtful gathering i've ever been to.
would also be remiss to not acknowledge my current editors, who have been tremendously supportive of me taking care of myself and being open about my experiences
going public with mental health stuff can be hard and it's a personal choice. i will never push anyone who doesn't feel comfortable doing it to do so. but please know i'll always be open about my own struggles because i want to help people realize they're not alone.
it's not weak to admit it to yourself or others. don't ever let anyone ever tell you otherwise.
i'll end by linking back to this previous thread. never forget that you're not alone. ever. https://twitter.com/dataeditor/status/1224366091289473024
