happy disability pride month!!! let’s go over some things!!! THREAD
have cerebral palsy, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, (and that chronic, hmu) and GERD. There’s a huge misconception that by acknowledging someone’s disabilities, you’re “othering” them. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.
By acknowledging disabilities, you’re acknowledging that there are things I cannot do or may need help or extra time to do. It’s also important to recognize that there is systemic ableism (laws) designed to keep disabled people in poverty, homeless, and unemployed.
It is legal in most states to pay a disabled person lower that minimum wage if the employer fills out a form stating that the employee is too disabled to adequately perform the functions of the job ( https://www.vox.com/2018/5/3/17307098/workers-disabilities-minimum-wage-waiver-rock-river-valley-self-help) thank goodness this is being phased out.
Even if a disabled person has been through school, has a degree and all the qualifications for a job, there are no guarantees they will be employed. Job qualifications such as “must be able to lift 50 lbs” are meant to weed out disabled people. Period.
must have reliable transportation” Lots of disabled people rely on public transportation. Accessible taxis are few and far between, and forget about Uber and LYFT!
People on SSI get a MAX of $783 a month. A one bedroom apartment is at least $700. Low income housing is hard to get into (the housing waitlist I’m on in Portland is literally TEN YEARS long.

I haven’t even talked about the ADA, but you can google that.
