Since I'm a distance-learning teacher now, I get to create the curriculum for my 8yo. I'm an #abolitionist who LOVES math, Civics, @elisabeth and @CandiCdeBacaD9, so creating lessons from current events is my jam. Here is today's lesson:
You live in Michigan. Your college freshman son calls you from Califonia at 2am to tell you he’s been charged with 5 felonies and is in prison. His bail is set for $150,000.

How much cash do you need to give the bail bondsman? You may use Google to find the going rate.
You will have to put up collateral for the remainder. What’s the total dollar value needed in order to free your son from prison?

Name three assets & est values that a Bail Bondsman would accept as collateral. You may use Google to find values.
Add the three values together, would you be able to post bail for your son?

What % of Americans have assets or savings worth this much? You may use Google to find your answer

Of that number, what % is (not Caucasian)? Estimates are fine. Talk me through your logic.
My 8 year old daughter completed this in 30 minutes. She got 85 points out of a possible 100. This stuff isn't hard, most people just don't have to think about it.

Obviously, the example is #BrockTurner. Tomorrow's lesson will be #kaliefbrowder and #bailmathSoRacist
She is asking why his parents put up all that collateral if their kid was charged with 5 felonies. "if they think the system works in general why would they decide it was broken all at once?"
Deep down, we all know the system isn't broken. White people don't have to care day-to-day, and that's called White Privilege. She understands that, too.
"So, we only learn the system well enough to advocate against it when it breaks on us, but we have no credibility since we were there in the first place, right?"

To every actionist out here, I see you, my kid does too, and we APPRECIATE YOU.
