The recently ousted head of SDNY, Geoffrey Berman, had been increasingly outspoken in seeking Prince Andrew's cooperation in the Epstein investigation and challenging what he characterized as misleading public statements. Most recently on 6/8: https://twitter.com/SDNYnews/status/1270074605923958785
Eleven days after that AG Barr surprised Berman by announcing he was stepping down. Barr attempted to appoint a NJ prosecutor as interim head of SDNY. After a daylong struggle, Berman secured some assurance that his deputy Audrey Strauss would take over instead and agreed to go.
Berman's objection to Barr's initial announcement pointedly said "our investigations will move forward without delay or interruption." About two weeks later, Strauss is set to announce charges against Maxwell in the Epstein investigation.
SDNY of course has a lot of investigations at any one time, many of them politically sensitive, most of them somewhat or entirely secret. Berman's ouster could be related to any investigation or no investigation. The recent moves in the Epstein matter are just unusually public.
