[How Tottenham can challenge for the 2020/21 PL title by net spending £20m this summer - a THREAD]

In this thread I will address:
- The weaknesses of Jose’s current squad
- Reasonable transfers that could take Spurs to the next level
- Valuable players Spurs can afford to sell
WEAKNESSES

With everyone fit, this is the best squad Jose could put out right now:
Last season, one of Pochettino’s biggest problems was the lack of squad depth that came with not buying anyone in the summer. This season, as a result of newcomers and aging, a few of last season’s starters have been benched: Jan, Toby, Winks, and (sort of) Lucas and Dele.
The positive of this is the strength these players add to the bench, as most of them are still very capable. The negative is that none of these aging players have been replaced, which has created clear weaknesses in the starting XI.
In my opinion, the current starters who would not start for a title-challenging Spurs team are Sissoko, Davies, Dier, and Aurier.

To recap, Tottenham’s biggest problem is the lack of individual defensive talent, which is a simple fix given how poor the team played this season.
REASONABLE TRANSFERS

Something like this would be the best lineup Spurs could reasonably afford for next season, taking into account the financial difficulties of Covid and having Daniel Levy as a chairman:
I made the following changes:
IN✅
- McNeil
- Dias
- Aarons
- Rice
- Dzyuba
OUT❌
- Jan
- Aurier
- Foyth
- Dele (let me explain)
LB
Spurs should look to splash the cash on fullbacks in the summer, given how successful the team were when they had the best fullbacks in the league in Rose and Walker. Levy should try to pick up one of the following for ~£20m:
- Dwight McNeil 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
- Sergio Reguilon 🇪🇸
CB
Although Sanchez-Dier is looking to be a sufficient CB partnership right now, the pairing is too error-prone and simply not good enough for a title challenging side. Spurs should look to pick up one of the following for ~£30m:
- Ruben Dias 🇵🇹
- Ben Godfrey 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
- Nathan Aké 🇳🇱
RB
Serge Aurier splits opinions among Spurs fans, but it is hard to see him as a title winning RB. There are plenty of options for Spurs, but I strongly believe that Max Aarons 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 is the way to go. Especially with Norwich going down, Spurs could get a great deal for him. (~£20m)
DM
Spurs have been crying out for a solid DM this season to compliment Ndombele and Gio. It is looking more likely by the day that Spurs will pick up Hojbjerg 🇩🇰, which I am fine with. He is no superstar, but Ndombele and Gio are, and they only really need someone to sit deep.
However, taking the easy way out of transfers has never won a team a title. In my opinion, Spurs need to make a statement transfer this summer, and DM is the perfect position to do so in. In the best case scenario, Spurs pick up one of the following top class DMs for £40 - £50.
- Declan Rice 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
- Denis Zakaria🇨🇭
- Wilfred Ndidi 🇳🇬
Backup ST
Spurs do not need a Rolls-Royce striker, rather one who is willing to sit on the bench and play when Kane is being rested. Levy should look to pick up Artem Dzyuba 🇷🇺, Olivier Giroud🇫🇷, or any cheap but reliable target man for ~£10m.
PLAYERS TO SELL

This is where some fans will disagree with me.
JAN VERTONGHEH
The CB will leave Spurs on a free this summer, and that is a good move for both parties. Jan was a fantastic servant for many years, but it is time to move on. Thank you, SuperJan!
SERGE AURIER and JUAN FOYTH
These are two players whom Levy could easily get value out of in the market. Neither one has had an outstanding career at Spurs thus far, and the way I see it, having Aarons and Tanganga would be more than enough at RB. Spurs could get £30m for them.
DELE
Before the Dele fans attack me, let me explain myself. I know that Dele is more than capable of recapturing his 2015-2017 form. I really like him...I even have a signed picture of him in my room (quick flex).
However, title-winning teams do not make transfer decisions based on emotion. The thing is, Gio looks like the next big thing at Spurs, and there is no scenario in which both he and Dele start. Spurs are not just going to go spend £130m this summer without selling players.
Someone valuable has got to go to allow for a complete defensive overhaul. And given our current overflow of midfield and attacking talent, losing Dele would not have that big of an effect on the team. If someone offers Levy anything north of £65m, he should take it.
SUMMARY

The transfers I described would cost ~£120m, and Spurs would gain ~£100m from selling current players, leaving Levy with a net spend of just ~£20m.
Levy will need some luck to obtain this title-challenging squad. Someone would have to submit a good offer for Dele, Levy would need to buy quality young players in 4/5 positions (not ST), and a few of Cirkin, Skipp, Tanganga, Parrott, and Sessegnon would have to step up.
But how much longer will Tottenham have the talent to be just £20m away from a title challenge? If Levy makes smart moves this summer, with some luck, spurs fans could finally witness an excellent Tottenham team win some trophies.
If you got to the end, I would really appreciate a RT. This took me a while. COYS⚪️
Edit:
Offload Walker-Peters, Carter-Vickers, and Rose for a combined £15m-£20m.
Pick up Alex Telles for ~£40m
