/12 Writing up your #qualitative / #IPA results section – some tips – prompted by [but not directly addressing] @LucyLoo_85
/12. Write in this order: Method, Analysis, Discussion, Introduction, Abstract, References. If you write your introduction first it will be too long. Write it last, when you know what you can spare it [in terms of word count].
/12. Write in the active voice. [Unless you hate your reader, in which case - yay - passive voice will be used to write this dissertation].
/12. Method section sub-headings that work for me, in this order: Approach or Design; Sampling rationale; Recruitment strategy; Description of sample; Ethical issues and approvals; Data collection procedure; Data analysis procedure; Reflections and credibility issues.
/12. Introduce the first person [or if multi-author, collective voice] in the Method section. Someone conducted these interviews. I was probably *you*. Also: you’ll be glad later (when you want to speculate or reflect) that reader already knows you are there.
/12. Analysis section: don't write anything yet. Make a detailed plan. Put in the titles for all the structured headings (themes, sub-themes), in the order that you hope to write about them. Add in *bullet points only* for the key points you want to make under each heading.
/12. Add in the data extracts that you need to use in order to make those points. You haven’t written any prose yet, but run the word count. It’s always too long. Go for a walk, and clear your head.
/12. Review the structure, and find some creative ways to absorb some of the lower level headings - tables, diagrams, leaner structure, fewer points, fewer extracts.
/12. Make the space you need to introduce and summarise each bit of the structure. Make the space you need to contextualise and interpret each data extract.
/12. Check that the selection of data extracts adequately reflects your sample. Get some feedback on your detailed plan.
/12 Now you’re ready. Open the floodgates: write the Analysis section. [Don’t forget to eat and drink].
