So I got a new neighbor a couple of weeks ago. Usually, my landlord tells me when someone new is moving in, but he didn't this time. So that would explain my surprise when I got a text one evening from an unknown number.
"Michele, I'm J***, your new neighbor. The landlord gave me your number." (gee, thanks for that) OK, well when did you move in? "Last night. It was an emergency kind of thing so that's why I moved in the middle of the month." (insert ominous music here)
Well, welcome to the building (I guess). "Well, I saw you have a UK doormat and then I saw a 'Big Blue Central' Wifi network and I assumed it was yours." Why yes, it is. "I couldn't get my modem & router yet and I'm burning through all the data on my phone, so..."
(we know what's coming next, right?) "Is there any chance you can give me your password so I can use your WiFi for the next 3 days or so until I get my internet set up?" OK, I'll be compassionate. It's not like my WiFi password is anything like any of my other passwords, so "OK"
Next day, she comes down to introduce herself. I guess she assumed I would invite her inside since she brought her glass of wine with her. Told her, "Sorry, but I can't invite you in. COVID-19 and all that, you know." She says she completely understands.
(ominous music plays in my head) "So, I can't get all my WiFi equipment, so I thought I could just pay you for half of your bill each month & keep your using WiFi." I quote what half the price is, assuming she'd think it was too much. But she quickly replied "Oh, that's great!"
"I get paid on the 1st, so I'll bring you a check then, ok?" I agreed with no enthusiasm. She thanks me and returns upstairs to her apartment. 3 days pass. This time, a phone call "So, do you mind if I use your washer & dryer and get caught up on my laundry?"
(I'm stunned and don't say anything immediately) "My washer & dryer won't be here for another week or so." As it turns out, my washer hose recently developed a leak & I'm waiting for a friend to repair it (which finally happened this past weekend), so I can't help you now.
So I did see someone take a washer & dryer down to her basement unit, so that much is over with for the moment. Then Saturday night, another text "Hey, you need to reset your modem & router. 'We' can't get on Netflix." (she lives alone - who is "we"?)
I check my smart TV - streaming with no problems. Laptop & phone also OK. I report to her that there are no problems with my network and had she tried resetting HER devices or checking to see if NetFlix was having issues? Never got a reply. Guess she hadn't done those things.
Today's the 1st and I have no check for the internet. But hey, MORE fun. Was in my office filing some stuff and suddenly, a very loud BANGING at my door. Literally jumped it was so jarring. So I head to the door, open it, and there's a sheriff. He says, "J***?" Nope, not me.
He's looking for the neighbor so I direct him to her apartment upstairs. Her vehicle wasn't here, so I assumed she was gone, but he sure stayed up there a long time (like 15 minutes). Now he's gone. Just no good feelings about this whole thing.
And that would have been the end of this thread, except for the odd thing that happened 20 minutes ago. I get another knock on my door. Not as loud, but louder than the FedEx knock. I go to my door, see a young man running outside, and look down to find a case of Mt Dew.
I'm so confused. Maybe it's for the new neighbor. I know the neighbor across from me doesn't drink Mt. Dew. And I know it isn't for me. So there is currently a brand new case of Mt. Dew (12 oz cans) sitting outside my door. Happy Wednesday, I guess.🤷‍♀️
