Yesterday I interviewed @deardrewdixon the subject of documentary #OnTheRecord and I can’t stop thinking about her and the control and erasure of womxn’s voices in the music industry. When #MeToo cut through to mainstream consciousness in 2017 I remember thinking “I wonder if
or when the music industry will have a similar moment. FYI #MeToo was started by the incredible @TaranaBurke in 2006, she doesn’t always get credited...if you wonder why that is, the first 10 minutes of #OnTheRecord will definitely give you further understanding.
You hear rumours about everything in this industry. Like the hotshot manager handling the career of a young female in such a manipulative and inappropriate way that she pretty much gave up her dreams due to exhaustion and fear, or the public figure abusing his status at gigs.
Aside from rumours, I SEE. Recently a female artist went public after she was violated by a male artist at a party. His actions were gross and so were those of the contrarians in her mentions vehemently questioning her truth, only proving that #rapeculture still thrives in 2020.
Womxn stay silent cos we fear that nobody gives a fuck but us, especially in an industry where the majority of gatekeepers are men and nobody wants to rock the boat. Female artists, A&R’s like @deardrewdixon radio pluggers, etc all have the right to work and not feel under threat
Something HAS to change...and it’s not the womxn. During the Q&A last night one of the audience members suggested basic training and courses for these dudes about abuse, harassment and consent. Tragic as it is, that would be a start.
. @DearDrewDixon helped shape the proverbial culture that we so often speak of.Her passion and work ethic created magic, only for it to be tainted by her powerful industry rapist and another man who decided to derail her when she wouldn’t sleep with him, thus making her walk away.
THIS IS NOT FAIR. Everyone who follows me should watch #OnTheRecord especially those who work at a labels, plugging companies, management companies, radio stations. Watch this documentary with your eyes wide open and think about your female colleagues http://ontherecordfilm.co.uk
