There was only one gubernatorial primary on the docket yesterday, but it was one of the most interesting of the year: #Utah. #2020Elections
Utah is one of only two states to have an open gubernatorial seat this year, as incumbent Governor @GovHerbert (R) will not seek a third term. Only one Democrat, Professor Chris Peterson @PetersonUtah, qualified for the ballot, and thus ran unopposed.
Peterson will be an underdog in the general election, but it’s not yet clear who his opponent will be. The Republican primary was tightly contested, with four contenders qualifying.
The race is close between the two leading candidates: current Lt Gov @coxforgovernor and former UT Governor @HuntsmanGov2020. With 74% of precincts reporting, Cox has a narrow lead, 37.0% to 34.3%. It is too close to call, though, and the final result may take days to determine.
Finally, while UT was the only state with a gubernatorial primary yesterday, there was other governor news: in Colorado, former Governor John @Hickenlooper (D) won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. He will face incumbent Senator @SenCoryGardner (R) this fall.
Thirteen current U.S. Senators have gubernatorial experience, but Hickenlooper would be the first governor from Colorado to serve in the U.S. Senate. #ColoradoPrimary
